“I’m trying to survive, but I’m not. I thank God and my family for being alive,” says Raísa Santos, a 19-year-old who lost sight in one of her eyes when she was taken hostage and shot in the Engomadeira neighborhood, in Savior. What happened was on August 5th of this year.
Raísa Santos is pregnant and lost her vision after being hit by bomb shrapnel. In an interview with TV Bahia, this Tuesday (29), Luciana Santos, the young woman’s mother, reported that Raísa was hit by a shot from a high-caliber weapon.
The victim stated that the kidnapper did not use a weapon of this type. She had to have one of her eyes removed during the procedure and her vision in the other eye is still impaired.
The young woman discovered her pregnancy at the Roberto Santos General Hospital, where she was admitted in a serious condition, unconscious due to medication. At the time, the young woman was held hostage by the criminal with her son, who at the time was just one year and three months old.
“They threw grenades into the house. I was asking for help for my son’s life. It was an operation that could have worked, but it didn’t. When the boy surrendered, I shouted that we were going to get out. I was still fine and could see I was hit when the police managed to enter and I didn’t see anything else”, says Raísa.
“To this day, when he sees me cry, he also cries, for that day”, he remembers.
Raísa said that she has not yet received adequate treatment to take care of her vision in the other eye, in which she can see.
“I’m worried about what it will be like when my son is born. When I came out of the coma, the doctors gave me chances, but I still haven’t gotten this treatment”, adds the young woman.
The Special Police Operations Battalion (BOPE) was responsible for the negotiations on August 5th of this year, when a man broke into Raíssa’s house, who was with her son.
The suspect was identified as Gilvan Dias Damasceno Santos, better known as Carrasco. He broke into the house at around 5am, taking mother and son hostage as he fled from the Military Police. The police confirm that he tried to escape the agents, but do not say what the context of the chase was. He was hit by gunfire, was rescued, but died.
“At one point he fired a shot, according to the BOPE intervenor, at Raíssa, and then she was rescued. [O Bope] had to intervene, and he was shot”, said commander Luciano Jorge, of the 23rd Independent Military Police Company (CIPM/Tancredo Neves).
