“’Madá Negrif’ has already become my last name, right? I accept it very well!”, jokes Madalena Silva. For more than two decades, the Bahian woman has run the Negrif brand, a reference in Afro-Brazilian fashion, propagating it with a lot of “love, affection and identity”, she highlights. Daughter of a seamstress, Madá grew up observing patchwork and buttons, and, after taking a fashion course at Senac, decided to embrace the trade: “I didn’t imagine that I would become a fashion designer, have a brand, stores, travel, sell for All over Brazil, go abroad. I am grateful to this affectionate memory that ended up leading me to the process of taking a fashion course, then I went to college and became a fashion creator”, she recalls.

“I define Negrif today as something necessary, because I see the testimony of women, their happiness in finding something that takes care of their bodies. The testimonials are really what motivate me to say ‘there’s more tomorrow’. Negrif is a brand that has soul, identity, welcome and love. It’s what really moves me”, says Madá. In a universe of vibrant colors and sumptuous prints, with dresses, gowns and wide skirts, nothing at Negrif is basic: “I like exuberance”, says the designer. Creating patterns and prints is the designer’s passion, which was reflected in her arrival at Afro Fashion Day in 2015.

“I remember when Fagner contacted me asking for an outfit for Afro. He said, ‘Can I come by and look at something on the rack?’ And I said: ‘Not on the macaw. I’m going to create something for Afro Fashion Day’. And it continued to be that way. It’s a constant emotion, when the month of August arrives, that little bug starts saying: ‘My God, what will this year’s theme be?’”, he explains.

Recalling her participation in all editions, Madá reflects on the maturation of Negrif, which follows her trajectory at Afro Fashion Day. Aesthetically, she highlights the change in raw materials in the composition of the pieces, as well as the diversification and consolidation of prints as a signature element of your brand. “Nerif started by making women’s faces, so much so that my first Afro piece actually had a woman’s face, which already identified the brand. But I was able to go much further. I was able to test new creations, and it’s funny because people recognize them. After the event is over, everyone asks if that piece was mine, which they recognized because of the print”, says the designer.

For Madá, Afro Fashion Day is a milestone in the Bahian and Brazilian fashion scene. She highlights the role of the event in revealing new talent, giving visibility to creators who previously did not have opportunities. “Stylists who didn’t have the opportunity to show their work started showing it on the Afro catwalk. Models also started a career, including an international one”, he comments. For Madá, AFD is a showcase that allows creators to assert their presence and show their ability to create fashion with its own identity, strengthening black representation in the industry.
