The Hospital Geral Clériston Andrade (HGCA), located in Feira de Santana, became the first in Brazil to use the Apple Vision Pro in neurosurgery. The technology, launched in the United States in the second half of 2024, has been incorporated into the hospital’s neurosurgical procedures, with the first surgery performed this month. The initiative is part of an innovative project coordinated by neurosurgeon Márcio Brandão, who sees virtual reality as a significant advance in the field of neurosurgery.
In the neurosurgeon’s opinion, virtual reality applied to neurosurgery at HGCA is an important milestone for Brazilian medicine. The technology, which is still in the implementation phase, promises to revolutionize the way surgical procedures are performed, increasing the security, accuracy and accessibility of data during operations. “We are bringing the most modern technology outside of Brazil, we realize that this technology can transform the way we perform our surgeries, bringing more safety and precision to the procedures”, says Márcio Brandão.
The first use in surgery at HGCA was led by doctor Leonardo Fraga, who used Apple Vision Pro to follow the procedure in real time and access essential information from the hospital’s electronic medical records, such as image exams and clinical data. “During the surgery, I was able to view the HGCA electronic medical record, navigate through the AGHUse system (Hospital Management Application), observe exams such as MRI, among others. Furthermore, I was able to follow the procedure through a connection to the surgical microscope, which provided complete immersion in a virtual world inside the operating room”, explains Fraga.
The patient, a 58-year-old woman from the Feira de Santana region, was diagnosed with a rare tumor at the base of her skull. The procedure lasted approximately 8 hours and involved a team of more than eight healthcare professionals. The use of Vision Pro allowed an unprecedented integration between Apple technology and the surgical microscope, something never before done in the world.
Doctor Luís Soeiro, a neurosurgeon specializing in skull base tumors who also participated in the procedure, highlights the benefits of innovation for patients. “This project can bring great benefits to our patients, because during long and complex surgeries, we have real-time access to all clinical history and exams, which can help us make faster and more accurate decisions”, he highlights.
