The MDB candidate for Mayor of Belém (PA), Igor Normando, won the election this Sunday, 27th, and is mathematically elected mayor of the city. With 95.18% of the ballots counted, he had 56.36% of the valid votes. Normando contested the second round with Delegado Éder Mauro (PL), who had 43.64% of the votes.
Second cousin of governor Helder Barbalho (MDB), Normando is 37 years old, has a degree in Law, was a councilor in the capital of Pará in 2012, was elected state deputy in 2018 and presided over the local Legislative Assembly.
In 2023, Barbalho appointed his relative as head of the Strategic Secretariat for the Articulation of Citizenship. During the election campaign, the governor actively supported Normando in his candidacy for mayor.
Although Barbalho is an ally of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Normando did not have the support of the PT member, nor of former president Jair Bolsonaro, in the first round.
Lula supported the re-election of the only PSOL mayor in Brazil, Edmilson Rodrigues, who lost in the first round. Bolsonaro had Éder Mauro as an ally.
In the second round, the PT and PSOL announced support for the emedebista. Edmilson’s party approved “critical support to defeat the extreme right”. The mayor of Recife, João Campos (PSB), also participated in the campaign.
During free electoral hours, Normando explored one of his trademarks as secretary, the “peace plants”, complexes that offer professional training, health, leisure and social assistance services.
“Igor will take peace plants to many neighborhoods”, said one of the first promises of his television debut in the 2nd round
The advertisement also said that Normando “will prepare the city for the COP, carrying out a large effort in all neighborhoods, to solve the problem of garbage, lighting, potholes in the streets and cleaning of the canals.”
The new mayor will have Cássio Andrade as vice-president, also from MDB.
