Coach Pep Guardiola gave an interview this Tuesday and endorsed the choice of midfielder Rodri as winner of the Ballon d’Or award. After congratulating his player on his achievement, the commander gave some kind of advice to Vini Jr., which ended up being overlooked when choosing the judges.

“It’s a vote, you have to accept the result. It’s simple. Sometimes you like it, sometimes you don’t, but it doesn’t matter. Tomorrow is another game, there’s another season, try again”, he stated.

He cited the example of Erling Haaland, who was on the list to compete for the title of “best in the world” and also had the same experience of not being the winner in the last edition.

“Should Erling (Haaland) have won the Ballon d’Or last year? Yes. Messi should have won? Yes. Vinicius should have won? Maybe. But that’s what happened. Xavi and Iniesta also deserved it, but they were in the Cristiano era Ronaldo, who was a monster. And the monster’s father was Leo Messi”, recalled the commander.

This Tuesday’s press conference was held as it was the day before the match between Manchester City and Tottenham, for the English League Cup. As the subject was basically the award, Guardiola took the moment to praise Rodri.

“I would like to congratulate him. And congratulations go to Rodri, his family and friends. Years ago we would not have imagined that a Spanish player could receive this prestigious award. We are very proud to have shared this achievement with him”, said the trainer.

Out of the team after suffering a ligament injury to his right knee, Rodri underwent surgery and is expected to miss the rest of the season. Guardiola used the award to send a message of comfort to his athlete. “I hope this (winning the Ballon d’Or) can give him energy so he can recover for next season,” Guardiola said.

Regarding Real Madrid’s boycott of the event due to the fact that Vini Jr was not chosen, Guardiola minimized the issue. “Nothing to say. If you don’t want to go, don’t go. If you don’t want to congratulate, don’t congratulate. Manchester is not here to judge anyone”, he declared.
