The news is full of information and daily updates on the geopolitical issues that shape society’s events and behavior today. International relations, pacts, conflicts, political changes, and climate issues do not happen in isolation, affecting the entire world. It is expected that these subjects of common interest will be topics for the next Enem exams, especially the essay.

To help students prepare for the test, the IngreSSAr program, created in 2018 and coordinated by the Municipal Secretariat for Policies for Women, Children and Youth (SPMJ), holds the Mega Revision Aulão, which takes place this Saturday (26), from 8am to 5pm, at the Salvador Convention Center.

In the following interview, history teacher Ricardo Carvalho provides important tips for students taking the Enem. He has been working for over 40 years in Bahia and other states, is a lecturer, author and theater director, radio and TV presenter, and is currently on air with the series “Insurgentes”, on the History Channel.

JORNAL CORREIO: Considering the latest Enem exams, which subjects relating to geopolitics are most likely to appear in this year’s exams?

RICARDO CARVALHO – Topics such as globalization, international conflicts (such as the War in Syria, the War in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East), the issue of refugees, climate change and international organizations (such as the UN and NATO) often appear. Furthermore, themes related to economic blocs (Mercosur, European Union, BRICS), energy issues and disputes over natural resources (such as the Amazon and water) are highly likely to be charged.

JC: How did these themes appear in tests from previous years?

RC – In recent years, geopolitical themes have appeared in Enem tests mainly through issues involving globalization and its effects, territorial disputes, refugees, civil wars, international migration and the role of international organizations in global conflicts and crises. There were also questions about the impact of climate change and the importance of preserving natural resources. These themes were treated in an interdisciplinary way, combining History, Geography and Current Affairs.

JC – What are your suggestions for students to prepare in the best way for the tests?

RC – It is important that students review key current topics, such as globalization, sustainability, economic blocs and recent conflicts. In addition to studying teaching materials, watching explanatory videos, documentaries and following reliable newspapers, practice with questions from previous Enem exams is essential. Another important point is training in writing essays and solving simulations.

JC – In addition to writing and History, what other tests might include such topics?

RC – In addition to writing and History, geopolitical topics can appear in Geography, Sociology tests and even in Natural Sciences and Languages questions. In Geography, questions may be linked to the use of natural resources and economic blocks. In Languages, topics about global communication and media can be discussed, which is directly related to geopolitics. And finally, in Natural Sciences, topics related to energy sources, ecology and natural resources.

JC – If the essay explores this topic, what would you advise students to do so that they don’t get lost in the face of so much information and are able to present a good essay?

RC – Students should focus on a clear organization of ideas: present an objective introduction, argue based on current data or facts and use relevant examples. It is essential not to try to cover too many points superficially. Choosing one or two solid arguments and developing them well is the best option. Using appropriate connectives to maintain the cohesion of the text also helps to structure a good essay.

JC – How were these themes worked on with the students who attended the pre-Enem courses and, in particular, the IngreSSAr Project course?

RC – In the pre-Enem courses and the IngreSSAr Project, these topics were generally worked on through thematic classes, review of current affairs, simulations of issues and debates on current news. We also develop writing workshops focused on geopolitical and current affairs themes to prepare students to deal with these issues in the dissertation text.

JC – Should issues related to geopolitics be reviewed on the eve of the tests and at the IngreSSAr Mega Aulão on 10/26?

RC – Yes, our review close to the test will be very useful, especially as we cover topics that have been in the news throughout the year and recurring topics in Enem, such as globalization, conflicts and environmental issues. However, it is important to remember that our review will be done lightly, focusing on the main points and avoiding overloading the mind with excess information. In particular, we want to highlight the presence of rich repertoire elements in the IngreSSAr Mega Aulão, such as the presentation of the Musical Show “O Que Vou Ser Se Eu Já Cresci?”. The play brings, in addition to important aspects about young people’s professional choices, a lot of content relevant to the Enem test.

JC – Given the current situation of fake news and misinformation, in addition to class content, what sources can students use to obtain reliable information that can contribute to good performance in exams?

RC – To obtain reliable information, students must seek reliable sources such as mass-circulation newspapers, scientific magazines, education portals and academic publications. Vehicles such as BBC, El País, The New York Times, Forum and fact-checking sites such as “Aos Fatos” and “Lupa” are great options to avoid misinformation and ensure that you are studying based on correct facts.

The Ingressar content project is carried out by Jornal CORREIO with the institutional support of Salvador City Hall
