The Day of the Dead will be celebrated with a party, cultural workshops and tributes to Gal Costa by the Instituto Cervantes. The event arrives in Salvador for the first time, and features an altar decorated with traditional Mexican elements, open for visitors until November 4th.
The main date of the celebration is the first of November, next Friday, when the project will have a special and free program. The welcome to the Day of the Dead party will begin at 5 pm, with a presentation of Mexican traditions for the holiday.
Starting at 6pm, workshops will be held to create “catrinas”, the famous Mexican skulls, along with workshops on facial painting of skulls. In Mexico, “La Catrina” represents a high society lady, and is popularly known as the main image of the Day of the Dead celebration.
In addition to the catrinas, the workshops will also deal with “literary calaveritas”, satirical poems in the form of an epitaph, dealing with death with humor and criticizing ways of living.
The catrinas and calaveritas produced will be exhibited at 7:30 pm, with prizes for the most outstanding works. Then, at 8pm, a party full of Mexican food and music will be held.
The main deceased figure honored will be the singer Gal Costa, who will receive an altar alongside two Spanish-speaking singers. Along with Gal, Chavela Vargas, a Costa Rican and Mexican musician, and Maria Dolores Pradera, from Spain, will be celebrated.
The event will take place at the Instituto Cervantes, located on Avenida Sete de Setembro, while the altar will be at the Spanish Government cultural center in Salvador.
