Formula 1 will continue to be broadcast on Band until the end of next year, according to an official statement issued this Monday (21). The championship’s broadcast rights were being negotiated with Liberty Media.
The intention of Liberty, the rights holder, was to terminate the contract that allowed Band to broadcast the races, as the broadcaster was indebted to Liberty for the licensing. The instability in the decision of whether or not to maintain the rights was due to low levels of audience and advertisers during the common racing hours, according to the Terra portal.
Under the circumstances, Globo demonstrated interest in the rights, which it has not had since 2020, the last time it broadcast Formula 1 races. Within the new contractual reality, the broadcaster even scheduled the reporters who would be responsible for covering F1 from July 2025.
Last week, a Globo event was held to promote its products for next year: Upfront Globo. On the occasion, a Formula 1 car was shown, which caused conversations about changing the broadcaster responsible for broadcasting F1 in Brazil to increase. Regarding what happened at Upfront, Globo only stated that the image of the car was merely illustrative.
So, next year, everything will continue as it already worked, where free training and qualifying are broadcast on BandSports, and the main races are shown on open TV.
Brazilian interest
One of the main reasons for the dispute over the championship’s broadcasting rights is the return of a Brazilian driver to the tracks, something that has not happened since 2020.
Who arrives on the F1 tracks is Gabriel Bortoleto, who due to his excellent performance in Formula 2, at the age of 19 could become a starter in the Audi team, signing a partnership with Sauber next year. Brazil’s last representative in F1 was Pietro Fittipaldi, who raced in the 2020 Bahrain and Abu Dhabi GPs for Haas, as a replacement for Romain Grosjean.
