Shirt on chest, ticket purchased and turnstile left behind. This is the routine of those who go to the stadium to watch a football game in Salvador. However, the Bahian fan’s ritual will gain another stage: facial recognition. The news was announced by the duo Ba-Vi in the last two days for Arena Fonte Nova and Barradão.

The implementation of the system is part of planning that follows the new General Sports Law, sanctioned in 2023, where stadiums with a capacity of more than 20 thousand people must have access via biometrics by June 2025. According to article 151, “ It is the spectator’s right to implement action plans relating to security, transport and contingencies during sporting events with an audience of more than 20,000 (twenty thousand) people”.

In a press conference held this Wednesday (23), the management of Arena Fonte Nova presented the schedule for the stadium’s facial recognition system. The identification signs will be attached to the turnstiles at the stadium’s 20 entrances and will aim to speed up the entry of fans and prevent fraud.

The implementation will begin with the Bahia x Palmeiras match, on November 20th, only for the cabin sector. In addition, the visiting sector, southeast and upper west areas are scheduled to receive the technology in 2024. The other areas will join the movement throughout the first half of 2025.

In addition to changes in infrastructure, technology has a direct impact on fan partners. According to the founder of Bepass – the company responsible for the system in Fonte Nova -, Ricardo Cadar, the use of the membership card should be abolished with the full implementation of the system. Thus, from the second half of next year, entry into stadiums for football matches must only take place using facial biometrics.

Security

The Superintendent of Technological and Organizational Management of the Public Security Secretariat (SSP/BA) Frederico Medeiros was present during the press conference and commented on the integration of the stadium with the corporation’s recognition system.

Initially, the systems will operate separately, with SSP using its own cameras around the stadium. On another occasion, with no set date yet, the two systems will be fully integrated to identify people with arrest warrants, missing people or fans who cannot attend the stadium for other reasons. Authors of racism can also be identified.

It is worth remembering that, in September this year, technology was responsible for arrest of a Bahia fan before the match against Atlético-MG. At the time, the man on the run for murder was trying to enter the Fonte Nova Arena, when he was identified. The technology alerted the Integrated Communications Center (Cicom), and Garrisons of the 2nd Independent Military Police Company (CIPM/Barbalho), which located the suspect and prevented him from accessing the stadium. The wanted person’s documents were checked, and he was sent to Polinter, where the arrest warrant was served.

The definitions of the new technology are aimed at football games and one of the objectives is the Women’s World Cup in 2027. However, shows and other events held in the sports venue can rely on the system, upon request from the productions of each event. .

Implementation in Barradão

In Barradão, implementation began in August this year, gradually. The use of technology was only adopted for the chairs sector, at first. This Tuesday (22), however, Vitória announced the expansion of the system to the stands and visiting sector.

The change in the entrance to the stands takes place this Saturday (26), in the match against Fluminense, in the 31st round of the Brazilian Championship. The expansion for visitors is scheduled for 2025.

In contact with Vitória, the club informed that there is still no integration of the stadium with the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) system. However, the club stated that it is interested in integration and that conversations are ongoing. The SSP was contacted, but did not return until the report was completed.

How to register

At both Barradão and Arena Fonte Nova, to purchase tickets with facial recognition, as well as enter the stadium, it is necessary to register a photo in the application related to each stadium. The registration process will only be necessary when making the first purchase. On game day, simply position yourself in front of one of the sector’s turnstiles with equipment in operation to gain access to the stadium.

For tricolor fans, there are three application options to register: ‘Sócio Esquadrão’, ‘Ingresse’ and ‘Arena Fonte Nova’. Red and black fans can register on the ‘Vitória App’, where they will be redirected to Ingresso SA
