Spacious, technological and sustainable. These are some of the attributes of the Airbus A350-900, an Air France aircraft that was responsible for the inauguration of the Salvador – Paris route, this Monday (28). At around 4:30 pm, the plane landed at Salvador Airport, bringing more than 300 passengers from France and boarded, at 6:50 pm, the first Bahians on the direct flight to the French capital. Those who saw the landing and takeoff were impressed by the size of the air transport, but those who boarded assured that, internally, the surprise was much greater.

“Inside the plane, everything was excellent. They had two meals: lunch, with pasta as an option, chicken and dessert; and an afternoon coffee with rolls, jam and other delicacies in the late afternoon. Furthermore, they had several bathrooms available and comfortable seats”, detailed tourism specialist Tânia Neres, who came from Paris to Salvador for work.

With 324 seats, the aircraft has capacity for 34 passengers in business class, 24 in premium class and 266 in economy class. The aircraft is Air France’s most modern and has unique features in terms of comfort, such as champagne service at any time. “The equipment has the best experience on board, because it is much quieter and the window is very large. It has 40% less noise compared to a previous generation aircraft”, highlighted Manuel Flahault, general director of the Air France-KLM Group in South America.

In addition to comfort, the aircraft is more sustainable, as it consumes 25% less fuel than previous generation aircraft – equivalent to 2.5 liters per passenger per 100 kilometers. This is because materials are used that are approximately 70% lighter: 53% composites and 14% titanium.

According to Air France’s press office, other differences of the Airbus 350-900 are the greater humidity inside the cabin, which increases passenger comfort, as well as the technology used in each part. The window, for example, instead of closing when you pull the protection, is ‘turned off’ when you press a button, which darkens the external view. There is also internet connectivity with different plans for those on board.

For Leonardo Costa, director of the Faculty of Communication at the Federal University of Bahia (Facom/Ufba), who was in Shanghai, China, accompanied by a Bahian delegation for an academic mission, what was most worth it on the Paris – Salvador flight, What took him to return to Brazil was the optimization of time. “What interested our group was having more of this connection with Europe, which made it possible to greatly reduce our return time. Our journey took 39 hours, via Fortaleza. On the way back, it was 9pm. [Então]is an important route for our city”, he said.

International connection

The inauguration of the connection between the capital of Bahia and the French capital is just the beginning of the plan that aims to consolidate Salvador as an international destination. From January onwards, the city will have the greatest range of international access in the last 25 years. According to Julio Ribas, CEO of Salvador Bahia Airport and VINCI Airports in Brazil, the flow will be up to 17% greater than before the pandemic.

“Bahia is the center of gravity of the country and Salvador is the capital of the Blue Amazon, so it is only fair that we consolidate the sector, currently serving six international capitals, three in Europe and three in South America. This route France, operated by Air France, brings Brazil closer to the European country, but not only from there. From France, we can connect with 160 destinations, meaning we can reach other countries in Europe, Asia and Africa”, he highlighted.

The increase in connectivity is also useful for those coming from outside the country. Those arriving in Salvador from Paris will be able to visit other capitals through a partnership between Gol Linhas Aéreas and Air France, purchasing just a single ticket that includes more than one destination. “We have more than 30 daily flights that connect the Northeast with other regions of the country and with South America. Bahia is very strategic for Gol”, said Danillo Barbizan, Sales Director at Gol.

Marcelo Freixo, president of the Brazilian Agency for International Tourism Promotion (Embratur), said that the mission now is to make the Northeast compete with the Caribbean. “We know that the average spending ticket for European tourists is higher compared to Brazil and the democratic tourism chain is very large. The hotel owner, the restaurant owner wins, but also the street vendor and the app driver,” he said.

“So, we don’t want French people to have to go to São Paulo and then come here. We want him to come straight to the Northeast, which has extraordinary beaches like the Caribbean, but also has gastronomy, nature, culture, diversity and the joy of the people”, he added.

Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues, in turn, recognized the importance of the state’s tourism moment, which is the gateway for 45% of international tourists who come to Brazil, and celebrated the advances in the segment. “Tourism is an agenda that mobilizes so many others. We celebrate what we brought in terms of tourism, but also business tourism”, he concluded.
