The documentary “Belov: A Life at Sea”, directed by filmmaker Tiago Abubakir, had its premiere on Thursday night (24), at UCI Orient in Shopping Barra, in Salvador. The screening of the short film was closed to guests, bringing together friends, family, authorities and admirers of the country’s greatest sailor, Aleixo Belov.
Aleixo Belov traveled around the world five times, three alone, sailing through the Northwest Passage, in Alaska, and crossing the dreaded “Drake Strait” to reach Antarctica. On his travels, he became acquainted with many cultures, received many gifts, and was recognized for his achievements, mainly for building the sailboat Três Marias from scratch, with which he sailed across all seas and oceans. This entire legacy can be seen at the Sea Museum, founded by Belov himself to spread nautical culture and be a center for discussion on environmental preservation.
Belov, always irreverent, stated that he felt like a star when watching the film: “I felt like a movie star! I never imagined that one day my story would hit theaters. This film was never planned in my life. All I know is that, when I was 17, they gave me glasses and I didn’t really know what they were for. It was a diving goggle. And I went diving and fell in love with the sea. Then I decided that I needed to build a sailboat to cross all the oceans,” joked Belov.

Director Tiago Abubakir highlighted the responsibility of bringing together a collection of images to tell Belov’s story. “We used a lot of images from the Aleixo Belov Foundation collection, a lot of footage taken by Leonardo Papini during his travels. Belov’s story is very rich and he is an iconic figure and a reference. Portraying the life of someone so inspiring was a privilege. We wanted to show the deep connection he has with the sea and how much it inspired and still inspires all of us. This film not only documents and informs, it immortalizes and pays homage to Aleixo Belov’s biography. He has an incomparable legacy,” said the director.
Larissa Nabuco, executive director of the Aleixo Belov Foundation, was also present and highlighted the importance of the film for the preservation of nautical culture and Aleixo’s legacy. “This documentary is very much in line with the mission of the Aleixo Belov Foundation, which is to tell the story of a person who is passionate about the sea and preserving the environment. The documentary is a gift for everyone who loves the sea. It is a work that not only portrays the adventures, but also the visionary spirit of Aleixo, who dreamed of exploring the world since he was young. It reminds us of the immensity of the sea and the cultural and environmental richness that we need to preserve”, said Larissa.
The event was attended by authorities such as vice-admiral Antonio Carlos Cambra, the president of the port authority of Bahia (Codeba), Antônio Gobbo, the former politician and journalist Joaci Góes, the president of Soamar, judge Baltazar Miranda, as well as representatives of nautical entities.
