Since it took place for the first time, in 1820, until today (20), when it was made official as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bahia, the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos stands out amid Bahian Catholic religiosity. The church, in Pelourinho, where the party takes place, was founded in 1685 by one of the first black brotherhoods in Brazil. The temple took almost a century to be built, and the party another 200 years to enter Bahia’s heritage book.
The Rosary Festival is a fundamental and inseparable element of the Brotherhood of the Rosário dos Pretos and has been taking place since 1820. The celebration involves a sung mass, a sermon and the exposition of the sacrament, followed by a solemn procession through the streets of the Historic Center. This Sunday, the celebration was even more special.
The Festival of Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos was made official as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Bahia, through a decree published in the Official State Gazette on Saturday (19). The ceremony of awarding the title took place a day later, during a festive mass at the religious temple, which was packed with believers.
Recognition
The studies for the registration were carried out by the Institute of Artistic and Cultural Heritage of Bahia (Ipac), after the Irmandade do Rosário requested the patrimonialization of the festivities and the State Council of Culture approved the inclusion of the festival in the Book of Special Registration of Events and Celebrations .
Father Lázaro Muniz, chaplain of the church, celebrated the recognition. “This makes us understand that this legacy has to be preserved by all of us, in addition to motivating us to keep the tradition received by our ancestors alive,” he said. For the general director of Ipac, Marcelo Lemos, the patrimonialization of the party is also a form of reparation.
“The Rosário dos Pretos brotherhood, since the 17th century, has come together so that the enslaved could have a place of welcome. So, it is very important that we maintain this festival, which also supports this church and is part of the Bahian calendar. Patrimonialization reinforces and recognizes the importance of the Brotherhood to our history”

“This work begins now, recognizing the heritage of this festival, to make sure that this tradition continues for another 300 years, because all generations need to have contact with this history and know that they are facing a space of faith and resistance”, highlighted the Secretary of Culture Bruno Monteiro.
