The Masters 1000 in Paris suffered its biggest loss this Tuesday. Italian Jannik Sinner, number 1 tennis player in the world, revealed he had a virus and decided not to compete in the French capital. Before the ranking leader, Serbian Novak Djokovic had already announced that he would not be in the tournament.

Without giving further details, Sinner reported that he is recovering from a virus. “I came here earlier this year to prepare better. But then I got sick. I have a virus at the moment, (the virus) should be over in two or three days. But, at the moment, I’m not ready to compete”, declared the Italian.

The absence should not affect Sinner’s position in the rankings. He is guaranteed to be at the top until the end of the season, even if he doesn’t play another game this year. The expectation is that the leader of the ranking will return to the courts at the ATP Finals, between the 10th and 17th of November, in Turin – the tournament brings together the best eight of the season and closes the men’s calendar.

Leader of the rankings, Sinner won two of the four Grand Slams of the season, the Australian Open and the US Open. In early October, he lifted his seventh trophy of the year by winning the Shanghai Masters in China, beating Djokovic in the decider. The Italian became the first tennis player to win more than six titles in a season since Andy Murray won nine titles in 2016.

The Paris Masters is the penultimate major tournament of the season, before the Finals. The French competition started on Monday and has Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz, second in the rankings, as the biggest favorite for the title.
