Mandatory from January 2025, facial recognition in online betting is already in the testing phase. Responsible for concentrating 75% of the national betting market, the Brazilian Institute of Responsible Gaming (IBJR) reported that the technology is in the integration phase on associated platforms.
Brazil will be the first country to adopt facial recognition in online betting to prevent fraud and prevent underage betting. According to IBJR, the solution will be similar to that adopted by banking institutions. At some points during the betting process, the authenticity of the user and the registered information will be verified. If there is any inconsistency in the information, the user will automatically be blocked.
Law 14,790/2023, which regulates online betting in Brazil, explicitly prohibits betting by minors under 18 years of age. Reinforced in regulatory ordinances by the Ministry of Finance, the restriction complies with the Child and Adolescent Statute.
IBJR will also adopt artificial intelligence tools on associated websites to block access attempts by children and teenagers. During user authentication, biometrics will be cross-referenced with other technologies used by bets, mapping possible irregular conduct.
This process, informs the IBJR, will use information stored in government and financial market systems. Facial recognition will prevent not only betting by minors but also operations by fraudsters who steal or hack cell phones to place bets on behalf of third parties.
