Brazilian Air Force (FAB) pilots intercepted a plane that clandestinely entered Brazilian territory. According to the Air Force, the aircraft, a single-engine model PA-28 Cherokee, came from Peru and was flying without a flight plan authorized by Brazilian authorities.
Detected by the radar network of the Brazilian Aerospace Defense System (Sisdabra), the plane was intercepted by military air defense and surveillance and reconnaissance aircraft around 10:50 am this Tuesday (22), when it was flying over the city of Lábrea, in the south. of Amazonas, around 700 kilometers from Manaus.
Still according to the FAB, the military gave the single-engine pilot the order to identify himself, change the route and land. As the commands were not heeded, the military fired warning shots.
Afterwards, the pilot made a forced landing in an open area close to the Transamazônica Highway. Before escaping, however, he set fire to his own plane, as a way of destroying any evidence and signs that would facilitate his identification.
In a statement, the head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the Aerospace Operations Command (Comae), Brigadier Major João Campos Ferreira Filho, highlighted the speed with which the FAB planes arrived at the single-engine aircraft.
“The monitoring technologies built into our radars, together with the readiness of crews and controllers, increase our ability to map traffickers’ routes and act to prevent drugs from reaching their destination,” highlighted the general officer, pointing out the main suspect as to what the intercepted plane was doing illegally in Brazilian territory. The PF investigates the case.
