Salvador began incorporating electric taxis into its fleet, with the aim of modernizing the service and encouraging good sustainable practices amid discussions on measures to combat climate change.
Henrique Viana, 24 years old, was the first taxi driver authorized to purchase an electric taxi in the capital of Bahia. In addition, eight more electric vehicles are already in circulation after the last notice released at the beginning of this year by the City of Salvador, through the Municipal Mobility Secretariat (Semob).
The professional, who has been working as a taxi driver in the city for two years, highlighted the difficulties he faced at the beginning of his career, mainly due to fuel and maintenance costs. “I started serving mainly the neighborhoods of Barra, Graça and Vitória. At first, it was very difficult, as was the case for many colleagues. First, I needed to make the daily money, then the gasoline, and only then think about profit”, he recalled.
He says that using the new electric car transformed his routine, bringing significant savings and increasing customer satisfaction.
“I had been researching electric cars for some time. When the opportunity arose, I had no doubts about opting for a vehicle of this type. The experience has been surreal. Every day I am more surprised by the comfort, technology, and low cost compared to the gasoline car I was using”, commented Viana, who left behind a 2017 vehicle, frequently subject to corrective maintenance.
According to Viana, the economy is one of the main attractions of the new phase. “I used to spend an average of R$100 to R$150 on fuel per day and today I am driving at practically zero cost, since I can charge the vehicle at the dealership. Customers are also loving the car, as it is something new”, added Henrique, who also revealed the idea of installing a charger in his own garage.

Modernization
Salvador’s Mobility Secretary, Fabrizzio Muller, highlighted the importance of accrediting new taxi drivers with electric vehicles as part of the city’s commitment to sustainable development.
“Through the accreditation notice, Salvador had the opportunity to have new taxi drivers already with electric vehicles. Moving in this direction means moving towards the future, with fewer combustion vehicles and more sustainable development”, declared the head of Semob.
