Globo will ride the wave of success that South Korean dramas have had on Netflix and other streaming platforms. The Brazilian broadcaster reached an agreement with the South Korean entertainment company CJ ENM, responsible for several k-dramas, or dramas – a term used to encompass dramas produced in East and Southeast Asia, although the definition has already generated controversy.
“We acquired some K-dramas for the Globoplay catalog, in line with the platform’s strategy of investing in licensing international premium content. When we have new information about premieres and titles, we will disclose it,” Globo confirmed to Estadão.
The productions will be made available throughout 2025. According to the Outro Canal column, from Folha de S.Paulo, the main purchase made by Globo is Twinkling Watermelon (or ‘Sparkling Watermelon’), shown by local broadcaster tvN in 2023, and unprecedented in Brazil.
The plot follows young Ha Eun-Gyeol (Ryeoun), passionate about music. He travels through time and, in 1995, meets the 18-year-old version of his father, Ha Yi-chan (Choi Hyun-wook/Choi Won-young). Together, they form a band with the aim of helping Ha Yi win over a girl at school.
However, Ha Eun has a mission to ensure her own existence – and brings her father together, in fact, with Yoon Cheong-ah (Shin Eun-soo/Seo Young-hee), her mother, then a young deaf woman passionate about art.
According to the columnist, the drama is expected to be shown on TV, on subscription channels, in addition to streaming.
