The action of shooter Edson Fernando Crippa, 45, who was found dead inside his home in Novo Hamburgo, in Vale dos Sinos, in Rio Grande do Sul, lasted almost ten hours.

The attack began around 11pm this Tuesday, 22nd, at a residence on Rua Adolfo Jaeger, in the Ouro Branco neighborhood and ended only on the morning of this Wednesday, 23rd.

During this period, he kept relatives under false imprisonment and opened fire on police officers. Three people died, including a police officer, as well as Crippa’s father and brother. Nine others were injured.

According to police, the shooter fired more than a hundred shots. The walls of the house were full of gunshot marks. He also shot down two drones used by the Military Brigade in the operation.

According to investigations, Crippa belonged to the Collector, Sports Shooter and Hunter (CAC) group, with three registrations for possession of weapons, with the Federal Police and the Army. All weapons were registered and in accordance with legislation

The legislation requires a psychological report for CACs that certifies that the person is capable of purchasing a weapon. However, Crippa had a history of four hospitalizations for schizophrenia, which police say they did not identify whether they occurred before or after the weapons were registered.

Inside the property, the police found plenty of ammunition: two pistols, a 9 mm caliber and a .380 caliber, and two more rifles.

In a press conference this Tuesday morning, the 23rd, the head of the Rio Grande do Sul Civil Police, delegate Fernando Sodré, compared the place to a “war scenario”.

Claudio Feoli, general commander of the Military Brigade, highlighted the complexity of the case due to the shooter’s resistance.

“I have been in the Military Brigade for 34 years and to this day I have never seen an incident with such fierce resistance from a shooter, armed with hundreds of bullets. He fired more than 100 shots, in addition to the hundreds of intact ammunition seized from the residence. The entire incident was extremely complex , given his resistance, but especially the withdrawal of people”, reported Commander Feoli.

The suspect’s father, Eugenio Crippa, aged 74, his brother, Everton Crippa, aged 49, and a military police officer, Éverton Kirsch Júnior, aged 31, are among the dead.

There are still nine injured – seven of them security agents, including police officers and a municipal guard. The shooter’s mother, Cleris Crippa, 70, and sister-in-law, Priscilla Martins, 41, are in serious condition after being shot by Edson Crippa. Both needed surgery and were taken to the ICU.
