Current champion and owner of seven Paris Masters 1000 victories, Serbian Novak Djokovic announced, this Wednesday, that he will not compete in the French tournament this year, which will start next week.
“Unfortunately I will not be playing at the Paris Masters this year. I apologize to everyone who expected to see me play there,” Djokovic said on his social media, without explaining the reason for withdrawing. “I have great memories of winning seven titles there and I hope to be back next year.”
Djokovic’s decision could compromise his chances of competing in the ATP Finals, which brings together the eight best tennis players of the season, in Turin, Italy, between November 10th and 17th.
The Serb currently occupies sixth place in the race. Jannik Sinner, Carlos Alcaraz, Alexander Zverev and Daniil Medvedev, who are in the top four positions, have already secured a place in the tournament that ends the season.
Djokovic has 3,910 points, just 505 ahead of Alex de Minaur, currently the first tennis player outside the classification. In addition to the Australian, Casper Ruud and Andrey Rublev, who are just behind the Serbian in the race, will compete in tournaments in the next two weeks.
Current two-time ATP Finals champion, Djokovic holds the record for the competition’s titles, with seven wins in 16 appearances. In attendance, the 37-year-old tennis player is only surpassed by Roger Federer (18) and Rafael Nadal (17).
