The mayor of Manaus (AM), David Almeida (Avante), was mathematically re-elected this Sunday, the 27th. With 99.01% of the ballots counted, Almeida received 54.59% of the votes, against 45.41% of his opponent, Captain Alberto Neto (PL), ally of former president Jair Bolsonaro.
During this period, Almeida has already worked for PMN, PSD and PSB. Now 55 years old, Almeida was elected state deputy in 2007 and served three terms.
In 2017, he became president of the Legislative Assembly, and in the same year he took over the government of Amazonas on an interim basis, after the impeachment of José Melo. He ran for government of Amazonas in 2018, but lost. In 2020, he won his first election for mayor.
Although his opponent has Bolsonaro’s alliance, Almeida voted for the former president in 2022, against Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
In his electoral propaganda, Almeida said he was “a Christian and conservative democrat” and stated that he does not take orders from “political godfathers”.
“My only boss is the people of Manaus”, he declared, in his debut during the free electoral period of the 2nd round. Among the promises, Almeida mentioned “the largest housing program in the history of Manaus”, with resources from Minha Casa Minha Vida, a Lula government program.
Almeida is also critical of the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima (União Brasil). “Security has become the main problem in Manaus,” says its propaganda, promising more armed municipal guards. “The city hall is doing its part, but the state government is not.”
Almeida’s vice-mayor will be Renato Júnior, also from Avante, who replaces the current vice-mayor, Marcos Rotta.
