Scheduled as one of the main black fashion events in Brazil, Afro Fashion Day began its history in 2014, at a time when the visibility of black creators and models was slowly beginning to gain more space, with aesthetics being an instrument of empowerment. A project that has expanded and today reaches its 10th edition, revealing talents that have won catwalks around the world and strengthening the work of Bahian designers.

These are years of work in favor of afrodiversity, black protagonism, visibility, circular economy, identity and belonging. To celebrate this story, the newspaper CORREIO launches this Thursday morning (23), on the YouTube channel 24h maila series of 14 mini-docs about the successes of Afro Fashion Day with models and brands that have already taken part in the shows.

In the fashion creators’ videos, Bahian designers who have been part of AFD since the first edition recall their trajectory in looks in the project, in addition to reflecting on the growth of their brands since 2014. The six names also detail the main changes, from designs to public reception, the challenges and evolution of the black fashion scene in Bahia.

Debuting on the Afro catwalk, young black people who often didn’t think about having fashion as a profession, now star in campaigns for big brands and parade through Paris, London, Seoul and Dubai. More than 500 models have walked the runway at Afo Fashion Day and many of them have gone on to become professional models. We will learn about the trajectory of eight of them in the mini-docs, how their lives were transformed after AFD and where fashion took them in the years that followed.

The mini-docs were created and created by the CORREIO newspaper media team. Starting in August, a research phase was carried out, collecting data from the vehicle’s physical and digital collection to map the models and brands that participated in all editions since 2014. At this time, articles from previous years were also recovered to understand the impact of the project each year and its changes.

After collecting the initial data, and after researching the social media profiles of all the names found and the creators’ history of activity, the brands and models that participated in the videos were selected. Next, the first audiovisual references for the video format were designed and interviews were recorded, with the brands in person and with models virtually. Finally, there was the editing process, post-production and writing texts and subtitles to accompany the videos.

Two episodes will be released daily until 10/30, marking the countdown to this year’s edition, which will be on November 1st, for the first time in Praça do Campo Grande. The parade, whose theme is Music – Recovering Roots and Raising Voices: the Music that Echoes Stories and Inspires the Future, will be divided into three blocks: Ancestral, Festive and Contemporary. Entry is free, with programming starting at 11am, with the Feira da Sé, workshops and musical attractions. The parade is scheduled for 7pm.
