Corinthians reported a case of racism in the game against Racing, on Thursday night, in the semi-final of the Copa Sudamericana. A fan of the Argentine team was caught making monkey-like gestures towards the Brazilian fans at the Neo Química Arena, in São Paulo.

“Sport Club Corinthians Paulista informs that it has become aware of a video published on social media during the match last Thursday (24), between Corinthians x Racing- ARG, with absurd and regrettable scenes of racist gestures”, said the São Paulo club , on social media.

The club reported that it is investigating the case to identify the fan who made the discriminatory gestures. “Corinthians, as it has done since its foundation, does not accept any type of racism or discrimination. The club is seeking to identify the fan who committed the crime and is committed to taking the case to the police authorities, as well as to Conmebol.”

Corinthians management repudiated the episode and stated that the gesture hurts all Brazilian fans. “Once again in a South American competition match, we see scenes carried out by the opposing fans that hurt not only the Corinthians fans, but the entire country.”

This Thursday’s game, marked by heavy rain in the region of the Corinthian stadium, ended in a 2-2 draw. The two teams will face each other again next Thursday, the 31st, in the city of Avellaneda, qualifying for a place in the final of the South American. A new draw will take the match to penalties.
