Brazilian schools are better equipped to use the internet

Media education questions the role of connectivity in learning

The results of the ICT Education survey, referring to the survey carried out in 2023 and recently released, demonstrate that 92% of primary and secondary schools in Brazil today have internet access. An increase of 10 points compared to 2020. Schools in rural areas were also favored, increasing access from 52% to 81% in the period. The same study also revealed that 90% of schools (primary and secondary education) have at least one computer (tablet, notebook or desktop). This percentage reaches 99% in institutions in urban areas, and 75% in rural areas.

Without a doubt, the data from this monitoring that has been carried out, since 2010, by the Regional Center for Studies for the Development of the Information Society (Cetic.br), indicates good progress when thinking about tools. However, from the point of view of media education, the question is: how significant is this connectivity?

“It is not enough to have computers, tablets and devices in schools with internet access, we also need to think about whether everyone has the opportunity to develop the set of skills, which is essential to make safer, qualified, responsible and critical use of everything that appears to us and all the possibilities that arise from this internet connection”, highlights Daniela Machado, education coordinator at Instituto Palavra Aberta.

She also highlights that it is necessary to think that in a country the size of Brazil, even though there is research showing that children and adolescents have, in some way, increasing access to the internet and use the network, it is known that the quality and the consistency of this access are not the same for everyone.

“Looking at the world of schools, we know that there is still a lot to be done to ensure that this possibility of connection is available to everyone and governments have been looking at this issue. I don’t feel able to assess whether they are looking quickly enough; What I can say is that we have to think beyond mere access, to think about connectivity that is truly meaningful”, says Daniela.

When thinking about media education, what makes this connectivity significant, in fact, is the development of a critical eye, the habit of interrogating information, being a little suspicious of what appears and also the responsibility that everyone needs to have at the time to produce and share content.

For media education, any discussion about connectivity needs to have this more holistic approach, in this case, looking beyond the device and thinking about how it is possible to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to be educated and develop the necessary habits for more efficient use. responsible and safer than all that presents itself.
