Braskem and Neste announce agreement to supply circular and bio-circular raw materials
Products will be used for the production of resins and chemicals

Braskem, the largest producer of thermoplastic resins in the Americas and a pioneer in the production of biopolymers on an industrial scale, and Neste, a Finnish refining company, signed an agreement to supply circular and bio-circular raw materials for the production of resins and chemicals. Braskem’s products, produced with these alternative raw materials, are expected to be available on the market from the fourth quarter of 2024. These products will be sold mainly in South America and will be part of Braskem’s Wenew product portfolio.
“This is a very important moment for the sector. We will begin commercializing a new solution that will adopt the highest quality standards in the sector, in order to guarantee sustainability from the beginning of the value chain. This partnership with Neste is a significant milestone in our journey towards the circular economy,” said Fabiana Quiroga, director of Circular Economy at Braskem in South America.
Braskem will sell resins and chemical products produced from more sustainable raw materials In this RE™: circular raw materials come from plastic waste through chemical recycling, and bio-circular raw materials come from the processing of renewable raw materials, such as used cooking oil, also known as UCO – used cooking oil.
“We are excited to welcome Braskem as our partner in advancing the transformation of the plastics and chemicals sector towards more sustainable solutions,” highlighted Jeroen Verhoeven, director of the Polymers and Chemicals sector at Neste. “We look forward to seeing our Neste RE solution in action in South America, reducing dependence on virgin raw materials in the production of resins and chemicals.”
The products resulting from the use of these raw materials will be certified by ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability and Carbon Certification), since the mass balance method is used in this production. This will give customers additional assurance regarding the chain of custody and sustainable origin of materials.
An innovative solution with clear contributions to a circular economy
By combining circular and bio-circular solutions, Braskem relies on two types of efficient raw materials to reduce the use of virgin raw materials and promote more sustainability in the chemical and plastics value chains.
Chemical recycling allows the recycling of plastic waste that is more difficult to recycle using other methods, such as multi-material or flexible plastics. In this sense, Neste’s circular raw material can contribute to increasing recycling and therefore help reduce the amount of plastic waste in the environment.
On the other hand, Neste’s bio-circular raw materials can help reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by replacing virgin raw materials in the manufacture of plastics and chemicals. They are produced from renewable raw materials such as waste, waste oils and fats, such as used cooking oil or waste from vegetable oil processing.
Both raw materials allow the manufacture of safe products that are also suitable for sensitive applications, such as packaging that comes into contact with food, representing a major step forward for the market. Especially in the case of chemical recycling, Anvisa recognized that this process produces high purity monomers, indistinguishable from the original monomers of virgin origin and that are in compliance with the applicable regulations for packaging that comes into contact with food, and can be used without the need specific authorization.
