The Civil Police of Paraná are investigating the cause of the accident on Sunday that killed nine people on BR-376, in Guaratuba, including seven teenage athletes from Projeto Remar para o Futuro. The team coach and the driver of the van, which was hit by a trailer, also died.
Among the hypotheses initially raised by the Federal Highway Police (PRF) is that of a failure in the trailer’s brakes. The 30-year-old truck driver should be charged with manslaughter (unintentional). His defense was not found in the report.
The collision, according to the Federal Highway Police of Paraná, was recorded at around 9:40 pm on Sunday, in the south direction, at km 665. The vehicle left São Paulo bound for Pelotas, in Rio Grande do Sul, on a charter trip . The young people had participated in the Unified Brazilian Championship, held on the Olympic track at the University of São Paulo (USP), in the capital of São Paulo.
According to the PRF, the truck, driven by a 30-year-old man, who was slightly injured, lost its brakes, colliding with the back of the van. The vehicle was thrown forward, hitting the back of the car driven by a man who was alone and was not injured. Then, however, the van rolled and the trailer dragged it off the track, falling onto the vehicle carrying the athletes.
The Brazilian Air Force (FAB) was responsible for transporting the funeral urns of the victims of the accident. According to the city of Pelotas, the wake will be collective at the Clube Centro Português 1.º de Outubro and should begin yesterday and continue today.
But families are already grieving. “I still can’t believe it, but I have the feeling that you’re going to come back, come back well, with light and happiness. My champion got his first gold in the sport”, wrote young Brenda Freitas, 18 years old, girlfriend of the athlete from rowing Henry da Fontoura Guimarães, aged 15, one of the nine victims.
Brenda published a passionate story on her Instagram page, in which she says that Henry “was and always will be” the love of her life. “My first boyfriend”, wrote the young woman. “One of the strongest people I knew, he went through horrible things and kept everything to himself, but always with a smile on his face and cheering everyone up.”
Also on Sunday, a publication made by the Tissot rowing academy highlighted the athletes’ participation in the competition at USP, with medals won, as well as a message of thanks to everyone who participated in this journey.
“A scenario of uncertainty with a single conviction: our young people were ready for this great challenge. We are immensely grateful to everyone who is part of our family and contributes to this tough process, which spares no efforts to overcome adversity to play grassroots sport in our project.”
