A 63-year-old man from Salvador who had a heart transplant and received an organ infected with HIV in Rio de Janeiro will need a kidney transplant. The initial transplant took place in January and now he has to deal with other health complications.
The patient spoke for the first time about what happened this Wednesday (23). In an interview with BandNews, he stated that he had not received any support from the Ministry of Health, the Rio State Department of Health or the government of Rio de Janeiro, having only been contacted by phone twice about the case.
The patient reports that the first symptoms began shortly after he was discharged from the hospital, in February this year. Initially, he presented nausea and loss of appetite, which were medically evaluated as signs of heart rejection.
The infection was only noticed in August, during a routine consultation carried out in Salvador. The following month, he began treatment with medication to combat the infection, but the use of medication damaged his kidney functions.
The patient will now need to undergo a new kidney transplant operation.
