Bahia had a night to forget in São Januário, this Monday (28). In the direct confrontation with Vasco, the tricolor performed below expectations, saw the black and white team score three goals in the first half alone and ended up defeated by 3×2.
Vasco built the victory in the first minutes, with Emerson Rodríguez. Afterwards, Frenchman Payet found the net twice more. Luciano Rodríguez, who came on during the match, scored for the Squadron. In the second half, Ademir scored another goal, but not enough to avoid a negative result.
The defeat left Bahia further out of the qualification zone for the Libertadores and made Vasco return to the fight. The Bahian team remains in 7th place, with 46 points, while the Rio team reached 43 and rose to 9th place. São Paulo, with 51 points, closes the G6.
After two consecutive games away from home, Bahia will now have a duel in front of their fans. In the next round, the Squadron will face São Paulo, at Fonte Nova.
After the 1-1 draw with Cruzeiro away from home, Rogério Ceni left open the possibility of keeping Biel among the starters, but the striker was vetoed after again feeling pain in his lower back. Thus, the coach chose the team considered starting during the season, with the return of full-back Arias and midfielder Caio Alexandre.
As is typical, Bahia started the match with more possession, but saw Vasco climb the lines to pressure the ball. The strategy caused the tricolor to be trapped in the defense field. Little by little, Vasco changed its stance: it dropped down the attacking line and started looking for a counterattack. It worked out.
The black and white goal could have come from the quick escape of Puma Rodríguez, who crossed low. In the rebound, the ball fell to Emerson Rodríguez, who was unable to take advantage. The pair were in sync. In the 11th minute, Puma took a risk from outside the area, Marcos Felipe failed to defend and delivered it to the feet of Emerson Rodríguez, who shot the ball into the net.
The Squadron accused the coup and continued to put pressure on it. Four minutes later, Rayan invaded the area and was brought down by Kanu. On top of the move, Raphael Claus scored a penalty. Payet took a strong kick and made it 2-0 for Vasco, in the 17th minute.
The adverse score left Bahia stunned. The Bahian team found itself vulnerable in midfield and was practically unable to create. The team’s first arrival was a header from Everaldo that did not pose any risks to Léo Jardim’s goal. Meanwhile, Vasco continued to take advantage of its chances.
In the 31st minute, Payet received a free kick and from the edge of the area sent a bomb into the corner. Marcos Felipe didn’t even move for Vasco’s third goal. Only then did Rogério Ceni decide to change the team. Everaldo and Jean Lucas left for Luciano Rodríguez and Ademir.
The changes took effect. In one of Bahia’s rare attacks, Ademir crossed the ball and Luciano Rodríguez, with a header, scored for the Bahian team, who went into the break with the score 3-1.
In search of at least a draw, Bahia returned for the second half with Rafael Ratão and Acevedo replacing Cauly and Caio Alexandre, respectively. The changes changed the team’s tactical structure, but the tricolor still had difficulty building.
On the other side, Vasco took advantage of the advantage to play on the counterattack, mainly exploring the left side of the attack, with Emerson Rodríguez. The black and white team almost scored the fourth goal due to a mistake by Kanu. Alex Teixeira stole the ball, entered the area and rolled the ball to Payet. Arias arrived first and prevented the Frenchman’s hat-trick.
Bahia couldn’t put pressure on the attack, but in the 29th minute they put the match on fire. In the quick counterattack, Thaciano received the ball in front and touched Léo Jardim’s exit. The goalkeeper made a partial save, but the ball was left for Ademir, with a header, to score the tricolor’s second.
Present in good numbers in São Januário, the Bahian fans began to sing loudly. Bahia continued looking for a draw. In a direct foul, Everton Ribeiro demanded a good save from Léo Jardim.
The chance to leave everything the same came in the 48th minute. After the cross in the area, Ratão finished, Léo Jardim saved and the ball returned to Ratão’s own feet. With the goal open, the Bahia striker sent it out and was unable to avoid defeat away from home.
