A survey carried out by the National Confederation of Municipalities (CNM) after the second round of the 2024 Municipal Elections showed that eight out of every ten candidates for re-election were successful, which represents 80% of those who tried to run. In Bahia, the rate was even higher, with 85% of candidates re-elected.
Furthermore, the research showed that the number of candidacies was smaller in this year’s municipal elections, with single candidates appearing in 223 Brazilian municipalities.
Brazil registered the highest number of elected female mayors (730), with an increase compared to the 2020 elections. But despite this, in the state of Bahia only 14% of city halls will be led by women.
Of the 5,569 municipalities that had elections held on the 6th and 27th of October, in 5,528 it is possible to certify a winner, while in 41 cities in the country the candidate with the most votes is sub judice, as is the case in the municipality of Vitória da Conquista, in southwestern Bahia.
Of the 3,006 declared re-election candidates, 2,461 won, 14 are sub judice and 531 were effectively defeated. As a result, the success rate of candidates for re-election was 82%, the highest recorded since the beginning of re-elections.
In data released by the Institute after the first round of elections, Bahia recorded an 88% re-election rate. The number fell to 85% after the second stage, but remains the highest in history.
