Representative Abílio Brunini (PL) was elected mayor of Cuiabá this Sunday, with direct support from former president Jair Bolsonaro, who was his biggest campaign supporter in this campaign. Brunini is one of the most radical members of the PL bench and his victory is also considered that of the former president of the Republic. The now elected mayor is mathematically elected mayor. With 94.74% of the ballots counted, he had 53.78% of the valid votes. He contested the second round with Lúdio Cabral (PT), who had 46.22% of the votes.

Brunini had already finished ahead in the first round, when he had 39.6% of the votes. Lúdio, his opponent, had 28.3%. Cuiabá is the capital of Mato Grosso, one of the states in which the agricultural sector has the most political power – and the group is mostly anti-PT. In the 2022 general elections, Jair Bolsonaro had 61.5% of the votes in the city in the second round, against 38.5% for Lula. The number from two years ago already indicated the difficulty that a PT candidate would have in the place.

The now elected mayor ran in a coalition where the PL was the only relevant party. Novo, PRTB and DC completed the group. Lúdio lost even though he had joined a broader coalition, with PT, PSD, PC do B, PV, Psol and Rede.

This configuration reproduces to some extent the formulas for the 2022 election. Bolsonaro focused on the right, while current president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva sought to attract sectors from outside the left. The difference is that, in Cuiabá, the broader alliance lost.

Bolsonaro jumped into Brunini’s campaign, while Lula did not do the same for his ally. Lúdio’s vice-president was Rafaela Fávaro (PSD), daughter of the Minister of Agriculture, Carlos Fávaro. Vice-president Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) even went to Cuiabá to demonstrate support for the PT candidate.

Abílio Brunini is 40 years old and is an architect. He is in his first term as federal deputy. Previously, from 2017 to 2020, he was a councilor in Cuiabá for the former PSC. He gained notoriety in 2023, speaking out in defense of Bolsonarists in the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry into the attacks on the headquarters of Power on January 8 of that year – Brunini was a substitute on the collegiate.
