Matthew Perry’s death shook fans, family and friends as soon as it was announced by the website TMZ, on October 28, 2023 According to the information, Perry was found in a jacuzzi at his home in the Los Angeles region (USA), having apparently drowned. No drugs were reportedly found by police at the scene. However, the autopsy detailed that he died due to the “acute effects of ketamine”, a substance used to induce and maintain anesthesia. At the time, American authorities considered the death accidental.
Where did the drug that killed Matthew Perry come from?
Following the medical examiner’s report in December 2023, the police investigation began, and in May, a Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) source told People magazine that the department was working with the Drug Enforcement Administration ( DEA) to find out the origin of the ketamine used by the actor.
Perry was legally using the substance at low levels, in a controlled infusion treatment, but the autopsy determined that the high amount of ketamine found in his body was fatal. The amount of the substance in his body was equivalent to that used for general anesthesia.
Matthew Perry was one of the most beloved actors of his generation. His death continues with ongoing investigations to this day – with five individuals arrested in the latest chapter of the story
Who are the inmates involved in Perry’s death?
One of the doctors accused of the overdose death of Matthew Perry pleaded guilty in a court in Los Angeles, United States. Mark Chavez claimed he illegally gave the actor ketamine medication. The professional could face up to 10 years in prison, according to the AFP.
Also arrested were Perry’s assistant, who lived with him, Kenneth Iwamasa; an acquaintance of the actor, Eric Fleming; in addition to Mark Chavez, doctor Salvador Plasencia; and also the drug dealer known as the “Queen of Ketamine”, Jasveen Sangha, who sold and took the substance to Perry. The five face sentences of between 10 and 25 years in prison.
Mark is scheduled to be sentenced on April 2, 2025. Until then, he will await the decision in freedom. At a previous hearing, he was granted provisional release after paying $50,000 bail and returned his medical license to practice in California.
According to the BBC, investigators allege that midfielder Salvador Plasencia met Perry and Kenneth Iwamasa in a public parking lot in Long Beach, California, where Plasencia injected Ketamine into Perry inside a vehicle.
Two days later, Plasencia injected Perry with a large dose of ketamine at the actor’s home, which caused him to “freeze” and see his blood pressure increase significantly.
Friends cast says goodbye with great emotion
The Friends actors shared farewell messages on social media two weeks after the death of Matthew Perry, who played the character Chandler Bing for 10 seasons.
Previously, the artists came together to publish an open letter. “We are completely devastated by the loss of Matthew. We were more than just co-stars, we are family. There is so much to say, but right now, we will save this moment to mourn and understand this unimaginable loss”, says an excerpt from the published text on October 30th.
Afterwards, each actor and actress from the series paid their tribute individually.
Family talks about death a year later
Mattew Perry’s stepfather, Keith Morrison, recently said it was “incredibly shocking” when the actor “died suddenly” at his home last year. “Anyone who has lost a child will tell you that even if you are somewhat prepared for the possibility, it is devastating. What we decided to do was hold on to that determination and try to do something useful,” he told Hello magazine.
Keith married Perry’s mother, Suzanne Morrison, in 1981, with whom he had Caitlin. She also spoke about the loss of her brother: “I have this treasure of being able to keep him very, very close to my life all the time, which is wonderful.”
She also spoke about the actor’s sudden death at the age of 54. “There was nothing unique about the pain I felt when my brother died last year,” he said. He also had half-siblings Emily, Maria, Madeline and Will.
Caitlin became the executive director of the Matthew Perry Foundation of Canada. She explained that she made the decision to feel like she was “sitting right next to Matthew, working with him every day on something that was important to him.”
Trajectory
American-Canadian born in 1969, in Massachusetts, Perry gained worldwide fame for his role in Friends, a series that ran between 1994 and 2004. His career, however, spanned other television programs, such as Ally McBeal and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, and several films at the cinema, such as My Mafioso Neighbor, with Bruce Willis, and What Now, My Love?, with Salma Hayek.
Perry has been nominated for an Emmy Award a few times, both for his performance in Friends and for appearances in West Wing: Behind the Scenes of Power and the television film The Ron Clark Story.
