Matricaria recutita L., better known as chamomile, is one of the most popular medicinal plants, used for centuries in both traditional medicine and modern herbal medicine. Its origin dates back to the regions of Europe and Western Asia, where it was used by ancient civilizations, such as the Egyptians and Romans, who already took advantage of its therapeutic and relaxing benefits. In fact, its properties cover several areas of health, from relieving digestive problems to combating anxiety.

Check out 7 health benefits of the herb and how to use it below!

1. Calming effect and reducing anxiety

Chamomile is widely recognized for its ability to help reduce anxiety and improve sleep, according to the São Paulo Regional Pharmacy Council in its booklet “Medicinal Plants and Phytotherapeutics”, from 2019. The presence of the flavonoid apigenin is responsible for this relaxing effect, acting directly on the receptors of the nervous system, promoting tranquility.

2. Anti-inflammatory action

Chamomile has anti-inflammatory action due to the presence of bioactive compounds. This property helps reduce internal and external inflammation, relieving symptoms of inflammatory diseases, such as gastritis, arthritis and dermatitis.

According to research Phytocompounds from chamomile (Matricaria recutita, L.) for the treatment of Atopic Dermatitis, the plant can be as effective as a steroidal anti-inflammatory medication, as they have similar mechanisms of action. However, remember that its use should not replace treatment recommended by a doctor.

3. Cramping relief

Chamomile is known for its effectiveness in relieving colic, both in adults and babies, due to its antispasmodic and muscle relaxing properties. Its active compounds, such as flavonoids and coumarins, help relax the muscles of the gastrointestinal tract, relieving involuntary contractions responsible for pain. Furthermore, its calming effect reduces nervous tension, which can reduce discomfort related to the digestive system.

In fact, the study Evidence of the gastrointestinal activity of Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla L. = Chamomilla recutita L.): an integrative review, published in the virtual health library, concluded that chamomile, whether in the form of extract or its isolated components (alpha-bisabolol and apigenin), showed satisfactory results in the treatment of gastrointestinal diseases investigated, such as diarrhea/hyperperistalsis, peptic ulcer, atrophic gastritis and gastric cancer, gastric inflammation and pain and antibacterial activity against Helicobacter pylori and Campylobacter jejuni.

4. Antibacterial properties

Chamomile also has antibacterial properties, thanks to the presence of compounds such as flavonoids, terpenoids and essential oils, especially bisabolol and camazulene. These components help fight the growth of harmful bacteria, promoting infection prevention and speeding wound recovery.

5. Helps with glycemic control

According to a review study published by the journal Complementary Therapies Medicine, consumption of chamomile tea can contribute to glycemic control. The publication points out that, of the 15 studies analyzed, four found a significant reduction in consequences compared to control groups.

“These findings expand the new functions of chamomile in improving glycemic and lipid profiles and indicators of oxidative stress in diabetes mellitus and related complications,” concluded researchers from Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, in Iran.

6. Antioxidant action

The presence of antioxidant compounds, such as apigenin and quercetin, is another highlight of chamomile. These flavonoids help protect the body’s cells against oxidative damage. In the long term, regular consumption of the plant can contribute to the prevention of cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases.

7. Favors the skin

Chamomile is a powerful ally for skin health due to its anti-inflammatory, calming and antioxidant properties. It helps reduce irritation, redness and itching caused by conditions such as dermatitis, eczema and acne. Furthermore, its compounds, such as bisabolol and apigenin, promote cell regeneration and accelerate the healing of wounds and minor burns.

How to use chamomile

See below the main ways to use the plant to enhance its health benefits:

  • Infusion (tea): use 1 to 2 tablespoons of dried flowers for each cup of hot water. Leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes and strain before drinking. Tea is ideal for reducing anxiety, improving sleep and relieving digestive problems;
  • Compresses: apply gauze soaked in chamomile infusion to inflamed or irritated areas of the skin to speed up healing;
  • Mouthwash and gargle: use the infusion to rinse your mouth in cases of gingivitis or throat inflammation;
  • Creams and ointments: topical chamomile-based products are recommended for mild burns and skin irritations;
  • Tinctures: administered orally to treat intestinal spasms and improve digestion, under professional guidance.

Although chamomile is widely recognized for its health benefits, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional before starting its use, especially for children, pregnant women, nursing mothers and people with pre-existing medical conditions.
