The use of intrauterine devices, popularly known as IUDs, has been growing in Brazil. In the public health network alone, there were more than 164 thousand insertions in 2023, according to the Ministry of Health. The number represents a growth of 43.6% compared to the previous year.

Despite being increasingly popular, there are many doubts about whether contraceptives work and their real effectiveness. To clarify, gynecologist Luiz Fernando Pina, specialist in human reproduction and endometriosis and founder of the Baby Center Reproductive Medicine clinic, answers some of the most frequently asked questions in the office on the subject. See below!

1. How does the IUD work?

The IUD is a device placed inside the uterus and its main function is to block pregnancy for the long term. There are currently three types: copper, silver and hormonal, which are normally known by their brand names.

They all act in a way that prevents the sperm from meeting the egg. The device can be inserted in an office or surgical center, making it a simple procedure. The woman goes home the same day.

2. What is the advantage of the method?

The main advantage is the prolonged duration. Another important factor is that the patient does not need to take contraceptive pills. Even in the case of a hormonal IUD, the patient’s stomach and liver are not exposed to hormones, as the device has local action.

3. Is it possible to get pregnant with an IUD?

The success rates are very high. But, yes, there are reports in the literature of IUD failures, as can happen with any other contraceptive method. If it is not placed well, it may fail. It is also recommended that in the first month of placement there is additional prevention, with a condom, to ensure contraception.

4. Who uses an IUD menstruates?

With the copper and silver types, yes, the woman has menstrual flow. The hormonal IUD can reduce or completely stop menstruation, which is why it is so important that the method is defined together with the doctor, who will indicate the best option depending on the patient’s clinical condition and objectives.
